Because Mencius and Hsun Tzu differ on their perception of human nature, their conceptions can alter a person's comprehension of a problem. Mencius believed that human nature is good. Every person is born with instilled virtues. If a person is not virtuous, then he has been corrupted by his environment.
After reading Mencius essay “Mans Nature is Good” and Hsun Tzu’s essay “Mans Nature is Evil” It made me realize that men are shaped by experience. People are born with a blank mind with a desire of some knowledge. Much of what we learn affects our behavior. Throughout our life, experiences have been shaping what we are.
Hsun-tzu could not accept Mencius idealistic view of human nature, nor did he believe that Heaven was the sole arbiter of human behavior. Hsun Tzu’s essay was a direct criticism of the essay written by Mencius and there were some very good examples of why he believed man is evil. However, in the end, my choice was to go with my instinctual belief that human nature is inherently good.
